Billy left the planet early this morning.
He died peacefully in his sleep.
I got up at 2 am and saw him lying in the room next to the kitchen. He wagged his big tail, thumping the floor as he always did when he saw me. I gave him a scratch on the head, got a drink of water, and went to back to bed.
This morning at 6:30 it appeared he was asleep on the floor in the kitchen. But he was already gone.
We knew there was the mass on his spleen, two more suspect spots, pain and stiffness in his back and hind legs, plus a problem with at least one of his kidneys. Who knows what other medical issue was creeping up on him.
I'd like to think he chose his own way out.
Billy was a noble and fierce protector. Perhaps a bit too fierce, he never did realize the people we invited in to the house were not a threat. In reality, Billy was afraid of his own shadow. Few people got to see how sweet and huggable he could be.
Thank you all for your good and kind thoughts.
And if you ever consider getting a dog, find a rescue. They'll give you everything they've got.
